Janurary 7, 1923 - Davenport. Just
back home from playing in Syracuse
and going to New York City to see
Nick LaRocca,  Bix & Wayne played
on the Radio. Bix was 19 then. Bix
also played the piano on radio in
early 1931 when he got back to New
York. Solo piano!
In the words of those who REALLY knew him,
Bix's father was a hell of a nice guy. I'll bet
Berton did this.
Wasn't Joe Reichman's theme song "Make Believe?" If
not, it  should have been.
Counter
Recording for Victor, yet banished from Davenport! At least
that's what the "Definitive Biography" of Bix says. Gotta be true
I guess.
Do you have any idea who this very young man
with a horn is? The face didn't really ever change
too much. 20 years later, he looked like this.-->
Red Nichols was 6 years old when the photo on
the left was taken. Nice picture, eh?
But get a load of this one on the right panel! --->
Slim Gaillard, Dottie, Red & Milton De Lugg.
Now that's a combo you don't see every day!
I had the pleasure of playing with Slim at
Hammersmith in London, many years ago. A very
nice guy. But I couldn't get him to play "Fried
Chicken O Routie", "Serenade To A Poodle" or even
"Avocado Seed Soup Symphony". But he was still
great.
I could never find out how "Mr. Fun" here made
out with his lawsuit. This happened in  1925.
Doesn't  he look like Adol....nah. Couldn't be.
Curt Hitch & Lennie Esterdahl.
Both were friends of Bix.
Ray Lodwig - A true friend to Bix! Ray spent most of his
Goldkette days helping Bix to read cornet parts. Gabbo
took that job over with Whiteman. Bix's biggest fans!
This is Davenport, March 5th, 1924.  It almost  makes you
wonder why Bix had to go to Chicago to hear jazz! The rest of
this page is full of ads with bands featured in the area.
This is from the Spring of 1931 in Princeton,
N.J. In his teens, Bix loved to do all kinds of
stunts ala Doug Fairbanks. Probably isn't  Bix.
It's a shame the name didn't make the
transfer. Iowa!  How the hell do you play a
cornet with your hands tied behind your back?
And in a lake fifty feet deep? Pulling a boat?
<---I wonder If She Takes Requests?
Now
Wheezer,
you give
Chubby his
Kazoo Lips
CD's, right
now! Do
you hear
me young
man?
Aw, cram it Crabby. No dame is gonna tell me
what to do! By the way, who's your little friend
there? Hiya toots, I'm Wheezer. I'm in a gang.
Ya wanna see the clubhouse? I got these
CD's....
