Bix played with Jimmie Caldwell's band in
April & May of 1922 while still sort of
attending Lake Forest Academy.

Speaking of a horses ass...
DID YOU KNOW? That when Ralph
Berton was ready to publish his fantasy
book "Remembering Bix", he realized
that he needed some facts in his book
to give credit to the stories that he
had made up? So he called Phil Evans
and asked for information that he could
use. Phil said that this wasn't a good
idea, considering they each had book
coming out about the same person, close
to the same time. Berton then went to
Arlington House and asked to see Phil's
proofs, saying that he had been given
permission. They threw him out on his
ear.
So
he just took the Bix section from
"Hear Me Talkin' To Ya" and put it in
his own book. Yeah, Right Ralph. And
Bix slept with your brother.

BAND OF THE 1920's!
I'm glad to see that Joe Oliver got Paul's
autograph! I wonder if he gave his to Paul?

Here's another shot of the Caldwell
Band from 1921. On the back of this
one, it says the sax player in the middle
is Don
Murray. I wasn't there, but that
doesn't get my vote. Still a nice shot!
Here's the Valentine's Day card
that
Bix sent to Thelma Griffin in
1921. This was in B&W for the
book. Thought you'd like to see it in
color. Ah, yes! The boy was a
charmer!

THROUGH THESE DOORS
Spring of 1998, Ken Burns production company contacted
Phil Evans. They were making a multi-million dollar
documentary on jazz. They planned on a large segment
dedicated to Bix. And would Phil like to be a part of
this project?
"Why, yes! Very much so!" was the answer. They

wanted a copy of the book, which wasn't due out until
summer. When he asked about compensation for his
life's work, they were quick to make an offer.
$100.00. When he refused he was told, "Fine, we'll
wait until your book comes out and take what we need!"
And they did. And they got
a drama queen to hack up
his own agenda driven story about Bix's family being
ashamed of him. You know... "Please love me for who I
am. I just want you to be proud of me! Look at me! I'm
in the best orchestra in the.....
'Click'.  Just
pathetic. I'm surprised he didn't have Bix singing
"Mammy", while dragging his bottle behind him. The
problem is - some folks might think it's true...
I have about 40 or 50 captions for this. But
each one would get me sued.
One of these days I'm gonna get me a band.
